Way To Go, Waka Flocka

My first instinct after watching this video was to drop it, drop it, drop it low and immediately pray to God for all of humanity. The second was to go outside, look for a falling star and if I’m lucky to spot one send out a wish that all of these men were sterile. After that I couldn’t think of anything but sigh.

I’m still not quite sure what the hell a Waka Flocka is, but the more I see it the more I despise it. One thing is for certain: There’s an obvious reason why so many of his searched images are of him in red. That reason makes me all the more angry, sad, and a bit hopeless. The last thing I needed to see after writing repeatedly about the recession (may The Recession Diaries rest in peace) is to view a video of a seemingly uneducated young black man championing gang activity – especially one whose since taken to rapping as a career choice.

I WATCHED THIS CLIP… I AM INDEED A FAN OF WAKA FLOCKA AND HIS MUSIC. NOWHERE IN THIS CLIP IS HE TELLING THESE GUYS TO BECOME GANG MEMBERS OR TELLING THEM TO THROW UP SORT OF SETS. IM TIRED OF SITES LIKE THIS AND @#$%! AND THESE BOUGS ASS TITLE CAPTIONS FOR THE VIDEOS AND PICTURES OF SOME OF OUR FAVORITE CELEBS.. WHY NOT JUST PUT A CAPTION THAT ACTUALLY GOES WITH WHAT WE ARE GOING TO VIEW… SOMETHING LIKE WAKA FLOCKA & CREW @ ATLANTA’S FIGURE 8 (CAUTION: GANG ACTIVITY DIPLAYED)… MAN, @#$%! THIS @#$%!! NEW YORK/ATLANTA (SOUTH SIDE) STAND THE @#$%! UP!

I read a couple of compliments like these on the page I found this video and to be fair to Waka [I hope you shoot blanks] Flocka isn’t technically promoting gang activity.

That is, not verbally. No, he’s just throwing up obvious signs and dancing around with a bunch men in red. If that sounds way more homoerotic than it should, forgive me. No…wait. Forgive yourself and watch that video against. Just turn the volume down. Look in silence. You’ll see it. It’s odd, isn’t it?

Back to the subject at hand, this video takes me back to my k-12 years where I witnessed a bunch of colored kids fall into this mindset that you needed to be hard, you needed act and dress a certain way, and naturally, you needed some sort of connection with people and what better way to do so than a bunch of other sheep with the same issues as you?

I’d be a fool to drop names, but let me just say many of the people I grew up around — I’m talking houses to the left, right, and further down the street for me are some sort of criminal. They grow weed on a large scale. They’re the middle man for some big scam artist. They sell drugs. They’ve robbed folks. They’ve done time. Every unfortunate statistic about black men quite a few who grew up around me lived it. The systematic factors that contributed to their poor decision making (well, to be fair some of them haven’t been caught yet, but you know…) I get, but it makes me no less angry.

As in: What is wrong with you silly niggas? Don’t you know how this often ends? If that word offends you, my apologies. I’ve tried to wean myself off of it for quite some time now. I was successful for a while, but then I look at videos like these and it’s the first word to pop in my head. Maybe I’ll give it up for Lent soon.

Two relatives work with juveniles. One as a probation officer, the other as a detention officer. Basically, the one who tries to keep kids out of jail and one who monitors them after they fuck up and head back there. So many are in gangs. So many are committing violent crimes far younger than most of us would care to acknowledge. All of them buy into this hypermasculine, violence glorifying, money hungry bullshit you see from the likes of Flocka and his fuckery-filled video.

I know people would like to believe that since we have a black president now little impressionable black boys will stop looking up to dumb fucks like this dude and aim higher. Not to be a cynic (don’t let the title of the site fool you), but I don’t find that to be certain. Sure, President Obama will influence a few but we still have a terrible public school system and societal factors at play designed to keep poor people poor (now that’s a conspiracy theory to believe in). Which means since this guy wasn’t swallowed when opportunity presented itself he runs the risk of influencing others because of his affilation with Gucci Mane.

And trust me, when I listen to said relative discuss the kids growing up in juvenile jail believe me they’re legitimately influenced by these artists. Some more than their own parents. All this video did was make me want to get back to mentoring. Or something.

Hopefully I’m as convincing as this other commentator:

Now why doesn’t this person have a record deal? They couldn’t be any worse a rapper than Waka Flocka.

I know that video likely wasn’t intended to prompt this sort of essay, but the ignorance didn’t entertain me. It only made me frantic for the future. Super sigh, ya’ll.
