Love This Now

I’m trying to type this without sounding like I’m filled with tang, but dammit, why don’t some of you like this video? What’s wrong with you? What is there not to like about this video?

It’s weird? It’s Lady GaGa. Stop it. It’s too long. It’s a mini-movie, enjoy the production value you attention deficit disorder suffering doof. OK, that was a little mean, but well…ten minutes isn’t going to kill you.

I also stumbled along up this opinion via MTV News:

However, Jess Wachtel had a more cynical view of the nearly ten-minute long video. “Looks like BeyoncĂ© and her put together a video to sell some records,” he said.

Oh my God. A pop star is trying to sell records. The world is changing so drastically. I don’t feel like I belong anymore.

Then there’s the part about it not making any sense. Well, GaGa tried to explain herself:

Yeah, so I have no idea what she’s talking about right here so I’ll give you detractors this one.

Such points won’t go to those who hate the product placements in the video. Normally I’d chime in and co-sign those sentiments, but the music industry is suffering so unless you want GaGa’s next video to be shot with a Flip cam watch her eat that Wonder Bread and enjoy her stunting on you heauxs in her Chanel shades.

As for the Beyonce can’t act comments:

Do that move for me this instant.

I don’t get the opinion that Lady GaGa deserves a Golden Globe yet Beyonce should never open her mouth unless she’s singing again. What I took from the video was that it was campy, over-the-top and very B-movie so in terms of acting I’m not surprised either one of them were performing the way they did. Silly me, I thought that was the point.

Anything else to me reads as nitpicking. That and I realize that when it comes to Beyonce people like repeating the the same talking point just for the sake of repeating it. Although I think outside of Cadillac Records she’s yet to really be challenged as an actress, I know that the perception about Honey B’s acting ability is so strong that even if she were to go on and wow most audiences in some role there will be people who still swear she’s Fantasia’s understudy. It’s evident by some people still claiming Beyonce can’t sing.

Hit yourself again if you think that.

But let me stop now because I tend to think people that don’t like Beyonce at all are lame. There, I said it.

As for GaGa, if this video doesn’t make you go Goo Goo for her there’s no hope.

I get that everything isn’t for anyone, but as a person who grew up at a time when music videos really mattered I appreciate GaGa for keeping the spirit of the music video alive. I loved the small homages to Michael Jackson and Madonna because honestly no artist since GaGa has really created videos anywhere close to their respective levels.

Beyonce’s certainly capable of such and I hope GaGa has inspired her to place a greater emphasis in the production values of her videos in the future. I respect the less is more approach, but a star of Beyonce’s caliber can afford (figuratively and literally) to think bigger.

I love this video. I love the visuals, I love the choreography, I love the way the product placements were done (they were tasteful, considering…), and I love the fact that two stars of their levels can come together not once but twice and there be no issue.

Just imagine what it would have been like had Janet and Madonna done a video together. Or even if Michael Jackson would’ve originally kept Madonna on for “In The Closet.” As much trash as people throw my generation’s way, I’m glad two of its largest stars can at least say their egos didn’t prevent them from making art.

Blah, I sound like I just left the set of one of the shows on the TGIF block so I’ll quit while I’m ahead.

Basically, this video is everything and if you don’t like go watch it until you do.

Thanks,

Management.

  • I love this video, it SLAYYED. It’s a cross between David LaChapelle and Quentin Tarantino and I think the bad acting and it being over the top was done on purpose. I am Goo Goo for Gaga.

    Those Beyonce gifs = Life

  • Yay! All the anticipation paid off. It’s been a looong time since I watched a video beginning to end. I usually go find something more productive to do but this one was fun! Made me wanna go to a club (I’ part of the ‘lounge’ set now), drink and dance. All in that order. I liked the Video Phone and Bad Romance videos but these ladies struck gold with the Tarantino-esque-ness of this video.

Why don’t I like this video?
    1. It’s a music video that’s 10 minutes long. TEN minutes of crappy music and bad acting/dialogue.
    2. It features a no-talent hack and an overexposed tramp.

    American music sucks.

  • *drops bombs on Amazed at Absurdity*

    How dare you.

    Michael,

You know, with each viewing I appreciate the (God, this word is overused but it suits this) EPICNESS of the “Telephone” video. Like you said, two of the biggest pop stars of our generation uniting in a Thelma & Louise, girl-power, Quentin Tarantino-flavored 10-minute buffet of colors, fashion, pop art and synchronized choreography? What’s not to love?

    Signed,

Goo goo for Gaga and Batty for Beyonce

  • I normally agree with the writer of this blog( Im as cynical as SHE ) but this short film was a boring hot ass mess. It played itself! Irony thats self consciously ironic =epic fail! I suspect that Im too old to see the innovation here because all I saw was “been there seen it, read the book, nothing new and exciting”. I feel that Lady Gag is a drag queen in womans body tryng to do drag and failing… and Beyonce we all know is a drag queen. They have both taken the edge and therefore the interest off of that sort of entertainment… where is Lady Bunny ???? Ive seen the viedo twice and it already feels dated to me …. sorry Cynical but hell no!

  • i have to be honest…that shit was HOT! the smoking glasses, tyrese being poisoned, the pussy wagon, all meshed imo

sidenote: dont you stans realize hating on bey=life? get over it…

  • I loved it. Period.
I did notice though that people are not trashing the video for being “sleazy” like they did Video Phone.
Must be nice to be a “Lady Gaga” and not a “Beyonce”…

  • I came for the music and was forced to watch a 7 minute short film that kept interrupting my video. Seriously, I love this song, but found myself fast forwarding trying to catch the music (I missed B’s verse the first two times I ‘watched’.)
And uhm, I thought the murder in Paparazzi video was interesting and made sense. But killing everyone in the cafe in this video felt disturbing, can we say overkill?
    @Kel
Hmm, I’ve heard that argument before (B is called a slut while Gaga is called a genius) and can’t totally vouch for its validity since I primarily read Black gossip mags that focus on B. Personally, I think the difference between their sexuality is that B seems to be about titillation i.e. she wants to turn her audience on, whereas Gaga, by using certain contexts, sets, and movements seems to want to the audience to focus on more things than just her body.

  • Agree with Kel….the hypocrisy kills me! Then again Gaga is weird as all get out. And she’s almost always naked …so folks have gotten a bit desensitized to it coming from her, also Gaga is almost androgynous…sexy is the last thing on your mind when u see her in her usual get ups.

The video was crazy hot, most memorable I’ve seen in a while…but i don’t think i have the stomach to watch it in its entirety…maybe from Gaga’s dance scene in jail, but before that… ga-ross!

Bey shocked me with this one….are they supposed to be lovers? By her usual standards this is risque.

    Gaga is soooo creepy!

  • I just thought the video was way TOO sexualized. I get tired of seeing that in rap; I don’t wanna see it from my favorite female singers either. I didn’t want to see Gaga or Bey’s asses. There are other ways to wow audiences. The video got a lot better when the music started tho (minus the half naked dancing); I thought the concept was cool.

Beyonce’s acting did lack a little personality, considering campy movies usually have overacting, but I got what they were going for.

  • I felt like you attacked us if we didn’t love the video lol dayum sorry! I just have to watch it again it was a bit too fast for me. The camera scenes changed quickly and I didn’t understand things until that scene passed and we were on to the next one so i couldnt process the current one. Like the kitchen sandwich scene…I was like wat the fuque? then I didn’t put the 2 n 2 together until tyrese was coughin up a lung and gaga brought it out. I didnt get why beyonce was in a hotel room. Was she waitin on gaga to get out but they showed her in there aftr she freed gaga? I just dont remember the video sequentially lol. Wonderwoman suits? Was the conceptually poisoning america? Or are they badass wonderwomen for poisoning their boyfriends?(paparazzi) so I gotta watch her explanation of the vid.

  • Well, as long as the kidz are pleased. That’s what really mattered (to them).

  • I’m sorry, I just didn’t like it, I don’t think Gaga is talented and she certainly isn’t this genius people keep making her out to be, she sings dance music and wears crazy clothes, didn’t Madonna and Grace Jones do that years ago? And much better I might add.

As for Beyonce, I’m just so disappointed in her, she is nothing but an over exposed product, she doesn’t do what she does because she she loves it, she loves the green and nothing else, I look at the video” Work it out ” and sigh when I think about the kick azz ARTIST Beyonce could have been….

  • Ratchet Iantuition

KIII @ “the kick-ass artist Beyonce could have been”, do you mean the kick-ass artist she IS? (NARAS seems to think she is.) Or are you just mad that she didn’t get out in the fields with YOU and sing you some good ole R&B spirituals?

  • *Death* @ R&B Spirituals ^^^

  • I hate Beyonce’s make-up in this video. Also, it’s interesting how Beyonce is now willing to show a more unflattering/zany side of herself since Lady Gaga hit the scene and showed how it’s done and can still be loved by mainstream.

  • The video was intriguing to say the least, nevertheless, the role of devil’s advocate needs a star, so here I go: http://vigilantcitizen.com/?p=3423

  • I HATED the video! I like Beyonce’s videos, love Gaga’s videos, but these two should never work together again; it is always a disaster (unfortunately, it is usually egg on Bey’s face). Aesthetically, the video was nicely done, like all of Gaga’s other videos, but instead of being forward thinking, different, and innovative, this one came across as a cheap, crass publicity stunt. Getting people talking because you are great and getting people to talk because you are shocking and vulgar are two totally different things. Since I luvs Gaga so much, I’ll just pretend that this video never happened.
P.S. Stop comparing Gaga to MJ! It’s annoying, undeserving (on Gaga’s part), and insulting (on MJ’s part). Her videos are great, but they can’t touch MJ’s!
