Can You Explain That Again, Unc?

If bullshit were an art form, this video makes Usher the Michel Basquiat of R&B/Pop. These days I increasingly feel like I have to preface every critique of Usher with, “I’m a fan.” But for real, though, I am. It’s just that…I don’t understand any of the words coming out of his mouth here.

It has nothing to do with me being slow. It’s more along the lines of me being a wee bit too quick to fall for the okie-doke. And nothing screams “okie-doke” more than a made up and completely meaningless genre called “revolutionary pop.”

When I first read about Usher introducing this term into the public, I had an honest reaction:

After hearing this brief explanation issued for slight clarification, I’m even more confused. Usher, don’t just use your words — use the ones that would actually make sense to describe what it is you’re talking about.

I’m not getting it and so are a lot of others.

He says: ” I did it with ‘Yeah.’ Taking a cultural experience and also worldwide recognition of a feeling and putting the soul in the middle of it. Not allowing it to, you know, shift heavily to R&B genre or pop. I did it again with ‘O.M.G.’ once again putting the soul in the middle of it, you know, which was electric pop. Experience with the soul. It’s bringing those elements together to tell a story that was born here [touches his heart] and that’s what ‘rev pop’ is.”

I take back the Basquiat analogy. Usher is more like the Dwight Eubanks of R&B. He’s just so grand even if the subject matter is about as grand as a Taco Bell combo.

If I recall correctly – and I do, because they play this song to death – doesn’t “O.M.G.” contain lyrics like, “boobies made me go wow, oh wow” or some gibberish like that?

Since I hate “Yeah!” to the core all I remember about that song was Usher talking about being in the club with his homies and one homie in particular, Ludacris, raps, “Take that and rewind it back, Lil’ Jon got the beat that make your booty go clap.”

If that’s what’s coming from deep inside you unbreak your heart, Usher.

This is the problem I have with so many artists these days: Their self-aggrandizing is taking us all to new and interesting heights only the product in which their boasting about is lower than most people’s standards during All-Star Weekend.

Y’all are not that ‘deep.’

What Usher meant to say was whatever trend is hot for the moment, he’s about to hire the producer largely responsible for it, make a track exactly like it but because given that he’s Usher his star will certainly lead to whatever song he conceives net more airplay than the actual trendsetting artists — allowing him to coast on something already proven to be popular.

That’s fine, and if it’s good, will pop lock to it but let’s not take ourselves too seriously. Usually the times that artists don’t, that’s when they get the praise they’re obviously craving.

In the end, it won’t matter as he’ll continue to ride this pop assault on R&B music for as long as he can until he and others will have to move on to something else. I guess, but I wish he didn’t have to be so¬†grandiose¬†about it, because honestly if Usher wanted to be revolutionary he’d continue making superb R&B records like “There Goes My Baby” and “Mars vs. Venus” that so many of contemporaries have abandoned.

And while we’re on Usher, could he spend less time making up arbitrary genres of music and dedicate that time from stopping his teenage artists from answering questions involving rape and abortion that will come back to bite his ass in a couple of years?
